Loyd Star Hornets rally past St. Andy’s

RIDGELAND — The Loyd Star Hornets rallied for two runs in thetop of the seventh inning to pull out a 3-2 comeback Division 6-2Awin over the St. Andrew’s Saints in baseball action Tuesdaynight.
Loyd Star (7-8, 3-0) trailed St. Andrew’s 2-1 going into the topof the seventh inning. Senior catcher Matthew Delaughter led offwith a double and scored the tying run on a double up the middlefrom David Cuevas. Tyler Williford hit a grounder to score Cuevasfor the go-ahead run when the St. Andrew’s third baseman threw theball over the head of his first basman for a key error.
The Hornets led 1-0 after three innings. The Saints tied thegame with one run in the bottom of the fourth and went up 2-1 withone run in the sixth.
“I thought our mental game was better,” said Loyd Star headcoach Sydney Wheatley. “Jared’s (Britt) pitching was good. We stillneed to hit the ball better. It was great to see us in a baseballframe of mind. We showed a lot of character.”
The winning pitcher was senior Jared Britt (2-1) with 2 unearnedruns allowed on 3 hits, 2 strikeouts and 1 walk. William Craigabsorbed the loss with 3 runs allowed on 6 hits, 5 strikeouts and 3walks.
Delaughter added another double for Loyd Star. Austin Fagansingled twice. Cody Cunningham also hit safely.
Chris Craig led the Saints with a double. Singling were WillFontaine and Benji Orlansky.
Junior varsity
Loyd Star pounded St. Andrew’s 9-3. Brent Fielder (2-1) was thewinning hurler.
Loyd Star hosts McLaurin Thursday for a pair of makeup games.The JV begins at 4:30 p.m. followed by the varsity at 6:30.
