Varnes, Perrett hurl Co-Lin over Onondaga Lazers

WESSON — Pitchers Boycee Varnes and Tyler Perrett delivered a1-2 knockout punch Tuesday at Sullivan Field, leading the Co-LinWolves to a sweep of the Onondaga (NY) Community College Lazers.Perrett won the 13-3 opener and Barnes claimed a 10-0 victory inthe finale on a beautiful day on the diamond.

Co-Lin (13-4) resumes play Thursday, playing a twinbill atLSU-Eunice. The first game begins at 1 p.m. On Saturday the Wolveshost Hinds for a doubleheader, also starting at 1 p.m.

Varnes (1-0), a southpaw from Simpson County, got his firststart yesterday and authored a 2-hitter, striking out 8 batters andwalking 2 in 5 innings. He survived a scary moment in the fourthinning when a line drive off the bat of Onondaga’s Todd Przybycienhit Varnes on the ring finger of his throwing hand.

“It just got jammed up a little bit,” said Varnes. “The sun wasin my eyes and it (ball) hit off my hand. I’m glad it didn’tbreak.”

Usually a middle-reliever, Varnes is being groomed as a starter.”My fastball was working and I tried to get ahead in the count.”His fastball is in the 84 mph range.

“Our pitching coach (Bryan Noble) has been really great,” saidVarnes. “He has helped us develop a lot.”

Co-Lin head coach Keith Case was happy to see Perrett and Varnespitch well. “Boycee and Tyler did a good job today. Tyler is stillrehabbing,” from arm surgery.

Case said playing games during Spring Break was important forhis team. “Our hitters need to see live pitching. We won two gamestoday but it wasn’t sharp. We made mistakes in the field andrunning the bases.

“We must be more focused for LSU-Eunice. We’ll probably seetheir No. 1 and No. 2 pitchers.”

Co-Lin 10, Onondaga 0

Co-Lin’s 10th run came racing home when Onondaga’s right-fielderlost designated hitter Diego Nucete’s fly ball in the lateafternoon sun. The Lazers (0-5), from Syracuse, play at Pearl Rivertoday and Gulf Coast Thursday. They are coached by Hardin-SimmonsUniversity graduate Chris Cafalone.

Jacob Leggett pitched 1 inning of relief, striking out 3 battersand allowing 1 hit. Southpaw Ben Grimm started for the Lazers andwas charged with the loss.

At the plate, Co-Lin finished with 7 hits. Centerfielder KeeyonSanders singled twice and scored twice, stealing 2 bases. Secondbaseman Patrick Williams singled and doubled, driving in 2 runs inthe bottom of the first. He was thrown out at third base, trying tostretch the double into a triple.

Catcher Joel Benchoff had 2 hits for Onondaga.

In the fourth, Williams led off with a single, stole second andthird and scored on a wild pitch, making it 5-0. Justin Sykes alsoscored on a wild pitch and it was 6-0.

Co-Lin 13, Onondaga 3

Perrett (3-0) pitched 5 innings in the opener. He struck out 2batters, walked 2 and allowed 1 run on 6 hits.

Justin Smith hurled 1 frame of relief, giving up 2 runs on 2hits, fanning 2 and walking 1.

At the plate, Co-Lin finished with 10 hits. Outfielder CaseyGinn slugged a 2-run homer in the sixth inning. RightfielderJeffrey Waycaster singled and doubled. Guy Alleman tripled.

Co-Lin exploded for 7 runs in the bottom of the second and 3 ofthe runs were unearned. Nucete, Sykes, Jody Britt, Aaron Guillotand Ben Sandifer collected hits in the game.

The Lazers got 3 hits from Benchoff and 2 from third basemanMike Fortino.
