Britts lead Hornets over Hinds AHS

Senior guard Jared Britt pumped in a game-high 23 points todirect the host Loyd Star Hornets in a key 64-56 District 6-2A winover the Hinds AHS Bulldogs Friday night.
It was the first district loss for the Eagles (17-5, 6-1). TheHornets improved to 4-3 in district play and 16-4 overall, avengingan earlier loss to Hinds AHS at Utica.
Britt also collected six rebounds, made three steals and had sixassists for the Hornets (16-4, 4-3).
In varsity girls action, junior point guard Jordan Britt firedin a career-high 30 points, made nine steals and had eight assistsin directing the Lady Hornets to a 69-53 victory. The win improvedthe Lady Hornets’ record to 11-7 overall and 4-3 in division play.Hinds AHS fell to 5-3 in the district and 11-11 overall on theseason.
The Loyd Star boys outscored Hinds AHS 17-12 inthe fourth quarter to preserve a big district win.
“We played good in the first half,” said Loyd Star boys coachGene (Moochie) Britt. “When they came out and pressed us in thethird (quarter) it stunned us a little. But in the fourth, wecontrolled the ball better and made some key shots and freethrows.”
A three-pointer from senior guard Rufus Humphries at the end ofthe third quarter put Loyd Star up 47-44 going into the finalframe. The Hornets led 18-12 in the first quarter and were up 38-29at halftime.
“My players played an outstanding game,” added Coach Britt.”This was a big win for us.”
Tyler Williford fired in 14 points for the Hornets. SidneyChester pulled down six rebounds.
“We made too many turnovers,” said Hinds AHS boys coach KeithWilliams. “We did not make free throws. We got outhustled. LoydStar wanted the game. We must play four quarters ofbasketball.”
Mario Webb paced Hinds AHS with 21 points, eight rebounds andthree steals. Carl Carson followed with 13 points and eightrebounds.
Loyd Star 69, Hinds AHS 53
The Lady Eagles enjoyed a 16-11 first-quarter lead but the LadyHornets went on a 20-15 run in the second quarter to tie the game31-all at the half. A 19-8 scoring spree by the Lady Hornets gavethe hosts a 50-39 advantage going into the final frame.
“We outhustled Hinds,” said Loyd Star girls coach Lori Britt.”This was probably the best game of the year.”
Shara Johnson netted 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds for theLady Hornets. Ashton Williams collected nine rebounds followed byHailey Ratcliff with seven.
Patricia Fultz led Hinds AHS with 17 points, six rebounds andfour steals. Tops off the backboards with 11 rebounds was JerricaThomas followed by Dominique Good with nine.
“The first half was very even,” said Hinds AHS girls coach BruceBaker. “Loyd Star outplayed us in the second half. We could not hitour shots. Loyd Star made their free throws. We must regroup andget better for the playoffs.”
Wesson hosts the Division 6-2A Tournament next month.
