Southwest rips Co-Lin

SUMMIT — Copiah-Lincoln and Southwest Mississippi CommunityColleges met Thursday night at John I. Hurst Stadium for a MAJCCSouth Division showdown. Both teams are eliminated from playoffcontention, but it is still Southwest and Co-Lin regardless of therecords.
The host Bears racked up 178 yards of total offense in the firstquarter alone, enroute to a 30-7 win over the Wolves.
Co-Lin (2-6, 1-4) wraps up the regular season next Thursdaynight, hosting the Pearl River Community College Wildcats for a 7p.m. kickoff. Southwest hosts East Central Thursday with thekickoff set for 6:30 p.m.
Southwest (4-4, 2-3) wasted little time in finding paydirt ontheir opening possession. A 9-play, 80-yard drive culminated whenquarterback Reggie Lindsey hit Damien Huren with an 8-yardtouchdown pass. Royce Fonte’s first-of-three successful PAT kickswere good and the Bears led 7-0, 4 minutes, 5 seconds into thegame.
Fonte tacked on a 25-yard field goal later in the openingperiod, to claim a 10-0 advantage heading into the secondquarter.
“We are primarily a running team,” said Bear head coach DomGreen. “We wanted to push with our offensive linemen.”
Southwest used the ground game to find the goal line with 13:24left in the first half. Dencen Clay scored on a 19-yard touchdownrun. The Bears carried a 17-0 lead at the intermission.
“We moved the ball well at times, but turnovers and penaltieskilled some good drives,” said Wolfpack head coach Dave Poinsett.”We need to work more on fundamentals.”
Lindsey, a 6-foot, 187-pound sophomore from Pensacola, FL, threwa pair of scoring strikes in the second half. Lindsey found Hurenfor a second strike in the third period on a 20-yard scoring bombat the 9:56 mark.
Bear tight end Rob Walker was on the receiving end of a 13-yardtouchdown pass from Lindsey with 9:54 left in the game.
Lindsey was 11-of-17 for 149 yards and 3 scores. RunningbackJoseph Tobias had 84 yards on 22 carries to lead the Bear groundattack. Wide out Alvin Winters caught 2 passes for 37 yards. Durenhad 28 yards on 2 receptions and 2 touchdowns of 20 and 8yards.
The Wolves got on the scoreboard with 1:22 left in the game.Quarterback Ty Smith hit tight end Billy Williams with a 19-yardscoring pass. Thomas Garland tacked on the PAT kick.
“This is a big rivalry game,” said Poinsett. “Both teams playedwith high intensity.”
Williams, a 6-3, 214 lb. sophomore from Brookhaven, led thereceiving corps for Co-Lin, catching a game-high 5 passes for 85yards. Shermaine Vaughn had 18 yards on 7 carries. Smith completed6-of-12 passes for 56, while Brian Hayes went 5-for-7 for 69yards.
Southwest nearly doubled Co-Lin in total offense, outgaining theWolves 294-150. The Bears had 145 yards rushes, compared to 25 bythe Wolfpack.
