Loyd Star boys, Bo’ Chitto girls win tournament

BOGUE CHITTO – In the championship game of the Bank ofBrookhaven Lincoln County Tournament Saturday night, the BogueChitto Lady Bobcats beat the West Lincoln Lady Bears 38-33 in R. L.”Bob” Calhoun Gymnasium. Jessica Melton powered 9-1 Bogue Chittowith 13 points. Randi Moak netted 10 points as the Lady ‘Catsavenged their only loss of the season.
In the boys championship finale, Loyd Star smashed Bogue Chitto80-59, led by Jared Britt’s 25 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals and 3assists.
In the consolation games, Loyd Star’s girls beat Enterprise47-35 and West Lincoln’s boys beat Enterprise 74-47.
Bogue Chitto 38, West Lincoln 33
“West Lincoln always plays well against us on offense anddefense,” said Bogue Chitto coach Mickey Myers. “That’s why wealways seem to have a low-scoring game against West Lincoln.
“Our girls played very well in this game,” said Myers. “WestLincoln made a comeback but free throws helped us win.”
On the backboards, Yolanda Drummond led Bogue Chitto with 12rebounds. Melton had 3 assists and 3 steals. Marley Porter and KiaPorter each had 4 rebounds.
Leading West Lincoln (7-3) with 16 points, including 4 threepointers, was Dana King. Hanna Roberts led West Lincoln on thebackboards with 9 rebounds. Hannah Johnson finished with 8 reboundsand six points.
King had 3 steals as they reduced BC’s lead to a field goal.
“Bogue Chitto was ready to play,” said West Lincoln coach LaneYoung. “We didn’t play very good the first half. We gave our self ashot the second half but we never could get over the hump.”
Loyd Star 80, Bogue Chitto 59
Rufus Humphries followed Britt with 13 points, 5 assists and 3steals. Dewayne Branning added 11 points.
“We had good hustle and we played good defense,” said Loyd Starcoach Gene “Moochie” Britt. “We have won this tournament five outof six years.”
The Hornets led 36-17 at halftime.
Bogue Chitto got 11 points and 8 rebounds from Irrie Catchings.Adding 10 points and 5 steals was Verrico Lewis. Adding 10 pointsNicholas Smith.
“We were happy to get to the finals,” said Bogue Chitto coachTheo Black. “Our players celebrated their first win too long lastnight. We must learn to execute better.”
West Lincoln 74, Enterprise 47
The Jackets (0-11)got a game-high 25 points from senior guardChris Porter.
“West Lincoln hit the open shots and we didn’t,” saidVaughn.
Senior forward Luke Lofton pumped in 21 points for the Bears(4-6). He grabbed 9 rebounds and made 4 steals. Brooks Smithfollowed with 15 points and Stacy Fells had 11 points and 8rebounds. Tyler Smith made 4 assists.
“We shot the ball extremely well,” said Coach Young. “It was agood victory before the holidays.”
The Bears resume play Jan. 3, at Loyd Star.
Loyd Star 47, Enterprise 35
Loyd Star was paced by Shara Johnson with 13 points and JamakiaHenderson with 10.
The Lady Jackets (3-8) got 13 points from Andrea Harthorne.
“I thought we played well the second half,” said Enterprisecoach Billy Vaughn. “We are still getting hurt on the offensiverebounds.”
