Bogue Chitto Lady ‘Cats, Wesson boys bag victories

BOGUE CHITTO – Senior forward Roderick Clay pumped in agame-high 23 points Tuesday night to power the Wesson Cobras to a70-54 win over the Bogue Chitto Bobcats in R. L. “Bob” CalhounGymnasium.

In the girls game, senior center Yolanda Drummond fired in 18points and pulled down 11 rebounds to direct the Lady Bobcats to a60-26 win over the Lady Cobras.

Wesson (2-4) played a strong first quarter and held a 21-12 leadover Bogue Chitto (0-5). At halftime, the Cobras were up 12 points,37-25. Going into the final frame, Wesson led 53-39.

“We looked good in spots,” said Wesson head boys basketballcoach Billy O. Britt following the win. “We are still not patienton offense. Our defense is coming along. Overall, it was a goodeffort.”

Adding support with 14 points was Adrian Merchant. Seth Brownnetted nine points.

The Bobcats, coached by Theo Black, were paced by Kerry Brown’s12 points. Irrie Catchings finished with 10 points and led on thebackboards with nine rebounds. Grabbing seven rebounds and makingthree steals was Daniel Moak. Lange Porter and Daniel Howardcollected five assists apiece.

“We played good,” stated Black. “We still have a ways to go. Weseem to be making progress.”

In the girls game, Bogue Chitto and Wesson weretied 4-all at the end of the first quarter. The undefeated LadyBobcats picked up the tempo in the second quarter to take a 22-11lead over the Lady Cobras at the half. Going into the final frame,Bogue Chitto was on top 42-18.

Bogue Chitto girls head coach Mickey Myers said they had justcompleted revarnishing the gym floor so the team didn’t get muchpractice in following the holidays.

“Wesson ran a good 2-triangle,” said Myers. “They are wellcoached.”

Meleah Brown netted 16 points and pulled down 6 rebounds forBogue Chitto. Randi Moak grabbed seven rebounds.

“We played real hard,” stated first-year Wesson girls coachJimmye Helms. “We had a good game plan. Bogue Chitto has bettershooters and quickness. We battled them well defensively.”

The 1-3 Lady Cobras were led by Channell McCrory with ninepoints. Hayley Carr finished with seven points.

Junior varsity girls

The Lady Bobcats beat the Lady Cobras 22-15. Leading BogueChitto with 10 points was Stanci Long.

Wesson got four points apiece from Megan Allen, Sam Ellison andChristy Watson.

Bogue Chitto visits West Lincoln Tuesday night for Division 7-1Aaction. The junior varsity girls begin play at 4 p.m.

Wesson hosts Franklin County Friday night. The JV games havebeen canceled. Thursday, West Lincoln visits Wesson for two juniorhigh games.
