Hornets silence St. Joe

MADISON – Seth Britt pitched a 3-hitter and the Loyd StarHornets beat St. Joseph’s Bruins 4-1 Tuesday afternoon in aDivision 6-2A varsity baseball contest. Britt struck out 5 battersand walked none.

“Seth pitched a great ball game,” said Loyd Star coach SidneyWheatley. “He didn’t walk a batter.

“We hit the ball well in spots,” he added. “It ‘s good to getthat division win and be 5-0.”

At the plate, first baseman Blake Wall smashed a 2-run RBItriple in the sixth. Leftfielder Logan Portrey had led off theinning with a double and later scored the go-ahead run.

Britt and third baseman David Cuevas had 2 hits for Loyd Star.Also hitting safely for the Hornets were Cass Brister and MatthewDelaughter.

The Bruins (7-6, 3-2) tied the game at 1-1 in the third.

Loyd Star (14-4, 5-0) hosts Class 5A Clinton Saturday, startingwith the JV game at 11 a.m. and the varsity at 1 p.m.

Wheatley said Thursday’s St. Andrew’s game has been rescheduledand moved to April 15, at St. Andrew’s in Ridgeland.
