Applications ready for two scholarships

High school seniors planning to attend college next year have anopportunity to receive some assistance with expenses through thescholarship program of a Brookhaven organization.
Applications are now available at the offices of area highschool counselors for the Junior Auxiliary of Brookhaven’s localscholarship and the Will Valentine Memorial Scholarship.
JA’s scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded to a deserving highschool senior who demonstrates academic excellence and financialneed.
Applicants will be scored by a committee on a number ofcriteria, including 30 percent for financial need, 20 percent forgrade point average, 10 percent ACT score, 10 percent curriculum,10 percent extracurricular activities and 10 percent work record,said JA’s scholarship chairman Toinette Grady.
“They will also be scored on the 200 word essay they write aboutwhy they would like the scholarship,” she added.
Students may also be nominated by two members of the communityfor the Will Valentine Memorial Scholarship, a $500 scholarshipbeing awarded for the eighth year to a student who demonstratesoutstanding leadership in community volunteerism.
Nomination forms are available at area churches, the BrookhavenChamber of Commerce and the Boys and Girls Club of Brookhaven.
