7-1 Wesson Cobras invade St. Andy’s

The Wesson Cobras are the leaders in the Region 6-2A race butthey must beat the St. Andrew’s Saints in Ridgeland Friday night toremain the No. 1 team in the region. Kickoff is set for 7:30p.m.
In area football action, Lawrence County is at Raymond, FranklinCounty visits Amite County, Jefferson County invades Hazlehurst,North Pike travels to Crystal Springs, Jackson Prep is at Parklane,Terry visits McComb and South Pike invades Port Gibson. CopiahAcademy (1-7, 0-2), a District 3-AAA member, has an open date thisweek.
Wesson (7-1, 3-0) is coming off a key 40-7 Region 6-2A win overthe McLaurin Tigers (4-4, 1-3). The Cobras, coached by RonaldGreer, face a tough foe in St. Andrew’s (2-6, 2-1) Fridaynight.
St. Andrew’s fell to region rival Loyd Star (6-2, 2-1) lastFriday by a lopsided score of 40-6. St. Andrew’s and Loyd Star arecurrently tied for second place in the region.
Powering Wesson over McLaurin was senior wingback Marcus Corleywho rushed for 112 yards on eight carries and scored threetouchdowns. Corley also completed a 53-yard halfback pass to RichieMiller for another TD.
On defense, the Cobras were directed by junior lineman JoshMcCormick with 10 tackles.
Last year, it took four overtimes for Wesson to beat St.Andrew’s 33-30 at home in Stone Stadium.
Lawrence County (7-1, 3-1) came out of an ugly Region 6-4A gamewith a 62-28 victory over the Terry Bulldawgs last Friday. CoachTrent Hammond’s Monticello-based Cougars hit the road for a visitto Raymond.
Last Friday, Raymond (3-5, 0-4) was handed a 21-14 defeat at thehands of region rival Port Gibson.
In the win over Terry, Lawrence County got four touchdowns fromsenior runningback Wayne Hardy. Named as this week’s Daily LeaderOffensive Player of the Week, Hardy rushed six times for 178 yards.He has totaled 450 rushing yards in the last three weeks. Rushingfor 124 yards on 10 carries was senior fullback Jonathan Eley.
Franklin County (5-3, 3-1) hits the road Friday night for a testwith Region 7-3A rival Amite County in Liberty. Franklin County,coached by Michael Goff, handed region cellar-dweller CrystalSprings a 35-0 beating. The Meadville-based Bulldogs are second inthe region, behind undefeated leader Wilkinson County (7-0,5-0).
Amite County (2-5, 2-2) is in fourth place in the regionstandings, behind third place North Pike (4-4, 3-1).
Franklin ‘s offense was guided by senior fullback James Huntwith eight rushes for 103 yards including a 97-yard touchdown run.Junior John Hickingbottom followed with six rushes for 80 yards anda touchdown.
Defensively, Bulldog sophomore linebacker Marcus Stewartcollected 12 tackles, a pass deflection and a fumble recoveryagainst Crystal Springs.
Hazlehurst (2-5, 1-3) was upset 6-0 by Region 7-3A foe NorthPike last Friday. Coach Willie Brown’s Indians visit JeffersonCounty (1-5, 1-4) in Fayette Friday.
Last year, Hazlehurst fell 16-13 to Jefferson County.
