WESSON – Senior Billy Ray Miller loves football even if he hasto play on both sides of the line for the Wesson Cobras. No matterwhich side he is playing, he has that smile on his face.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound running back/linebacker collected 14tackles for the Cobras during last Friday’s 20-12 victory over theNorth Pike Jaguars. On offense, he rushed the football 11 times for114 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

For his accomplishments on the football field, Miller has beennamed The Daily Leader’s Defensive Player of the Week for thesecond week of the 2001 football season.

“I feel good about it,” smiled Miller, when informed of therecognition. He runs the 40-yard dash in 4.6.

“Billy Ray Miller is a super kid,” said Wesson head coachfootball Ronald Greer. “He loves to play football. He had atremendous summer. He plays both ways and gives it everything he’sgot.”

This is the third time Miller has been singled out as aplayer of the week since he has been playing football at Wesson.During the 2000 football season, Miller was selected twice duringhis junior year.

Miller said he and the team enjoyed the win over North Pike.”Everybody did their job. We came around and played our best. Theteam played pretty good in the first quarter. We were down in thesecond and third and we came back in the fourth.”

At linebacker, Miller’s key responsibilities are watchingthe ends and the fullbacks. Also joining Miller at the linebackerposition are Russell Robinson and Emanuel Sinclair.

“Our linebackers did a outstanding job,” addedMiller.

Miller says that the team goals are to win win theirdivision and then South State. “I think we have a good chance towin division, South State and win it all (State 2A).”

This week the Cobras tackle another larger opponent.Prentiss is a 3A team and stands in the way of Wesson getting itsthird win on the season.

“We have to play hard like we are capable of,” Millerstated.

Miller also plays basketball for the Cobras, He playedcenter last season for former coach Jimmie Nail. Miller averaged 16points per game.

Miller says that he definitely plans to continue playingfootball on the college level.

“I want to play college football,” Miller explained. “Iwould like to play for Tennessee.” He is undecided yet on amajor.

In the NFL, Miller likes the Denver Broncos. His favoriteplayer is Bill Romanowski, who also is an insidelinebacker.

Miller expressed his appreciation to the Cobra defense,especially the following linemen; junior end Josh McCormick, seniortackle Robert Bishop, junior end Charles Powell and juniornoseguard Matt Dyess.

“They did a good job on defense,” added Miller.
