Franklin Co. hosts 11-team jamboree

MEADVILLE – Eleven local and area high school football coacheswill have the opportunity to see how well their teams haveprogressed in Friday’s Sixth Annul Cellular South Spring FootballClassic at Franklin County’s Louie Mullins Stadium.

Franklin County head football coach Michael Goff, his coachingstaff and sponsor Cellular South have put together another excitingevening of spring football action. Kickoff begins at 4 p.m.

Joining Franklin County for this year’s jamboree are AmiteCounty, Bogue Chitto, Dexter, Lawrence County, Loyd Star, NorthPike, Tylertown, Wesson, West Lincoln and Wilkinson County.

The format features two games played at a time on opposite endsof the football field. Each team has the football for 15 minutes onoffense. Then that team will play defense for 15 minutes. The ballwill never go beyond the 40-yard line. If there is a turnover, theteam will start again at the 40.

The schedule begins with Franklin County vs. West Lincoln andLoyd Star vs. Tylertown at 4 p.m. The remaining order of playfeatures Bogue Chitto vs. North Pike; West Lincoln vs. Tylertown;Wesson vs. Bogue Chitto; Loyd Star vs. Tylertown; Franklin Countyvs. Lawrence County; Loyd Star vs. Dexter; Wilkinson County vs.Amite County; Wesson vs. Wilkinson County; Amite County vs.Lawrence County and Franklin County vs. Tylertown.

The spring scrimmage features the return of a veteran coach witha new team and the debut of a new area head coach.

Veteran head coach Roe Burns has returned to high schoolfootball with the West Lincoln Bears. Burns, who coached footballat Loyd Star for 20 years, retired one year ago. Burns replaced DonHolston who resigned in December due for health reasons.

Trent Hammond makes his debut as the new Lawrence County headfootball coach. Hammond replaced Danny Adams who coached theMonticello-based Cougars to a State Class 4A football championshipin 1999 and three winning records during his three years.
