Cathedral holds lead in 2A state golf test

WESSON -Mark Carter and Stephen Hollingsworth directed NatchezCathedral to an impressive first round lead Tuesday in the Class 2AState Golf Tournament. Hollingsworth shot a 4-over-par 76 andCarter was 7-over at 79 as the Green Wave team shot a 328 to leadrunner-up Booneville by four strokes at the Wolf Hollow GolfClub.
On a warm, humid day, Gulfport St. John, the defending 2A statechampion, was in third place at 336. Todd Smith’s 79 paced theEagles.
Loyd Star, the tournament host, was 12 strokes off the pace at340 and in fourth place. The Hornets got a low score of 79 byjunior Trent Maddox. Jody Britt and Blake Windham both shot 85,while Josh Wright shot 91 and Dylan Britt 92.
Daniel Boles of Clarkdale had the low round of the day at 75 buthis team was in seventh place.
Leland Hinton of Wesson shot 79 and was the leader among theClass 2A individuals. Hinton, a freshman, was 3-over after thefirst nine holes.
“We have had a lot of favorable comments about the course andthe tournament,” said Loyd Star coach Ricky Myers. “Everythingseems to be going pretty well.”
In Class 1A, West Union’s Eagles were the first round leaderswith a 333. Vicksburg St. Aloysius was 4 strokes behind at 337 anddefending state champion Biloxi Mercy Cross was third at 355.
West Union was led by Brady Brock who shot 76 and JonathanHuerta with an 82.
Leading the individual 1A scores Tuesday was B.J. McNeal ofMyrtle with an 83.
