Terry plugs Brook in 9 innings

Brookhaven was looking to close out its regular season with arevenge win. The Panthers were on a 3-game skid, coming into thefinal game of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader with Division 6-4Afoe Terry here on Moyer Field.

The Bulldogs had already clinched the division championship witha 2-1 victory in Game 1. Terry head coach Jerry Gibson’s ballclubwas able get the sweep with a narrow 4-2 win over the Panthers in 9innings.

Both teams advance to the best-of-three South 4A state playoffseries, which begins on Thursday. Terry plays host to Division 7runner-up Picayune. Brookhaven will travel to Division 7 championOak Grove. Game times are to be announced.

Terry 4, Brookhaven 2

Brookhaven (18-6, 11-4) got off to a good start in theirhalf of the second, taking a 1-0 lead. Rightfielder Miguel Banksled off the inning with a single, later advancing to third on a2-base error. Two batters later, first baseman Ben Goza singled toscore Banks.

Terry (26-3, 14-1) would tie the game at 1-1 in the topof the seventh. Third baseman Stephen Hood walked and moved tosecond on a sacrifice bunt by B.J. Engle. Leftfielder Adam Davissingled, moving Hood to third. Sam Donald’s sacrifice fly tocenterfield scored Hood.

The Bulldogs held their own in the bottom of theseventh. A Brookhaven runner, Dreamus Herron, was not allowed toscore a potential game-winning run from third after singling,sending the game into extra innings. The next to batters wereretired.

The Dawgs claimed a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth.Nathan Sanders singled and stole second. Chris Snell’s singlescored Sanders.

Sanders led the Dawgs with 3 singles and a runscored.

The Panthers, coached by Randy Spring and assistantsDwayne Oberschmidt and Jeremy Albritton, would answer in their halfof the inning. Fred Perkins walked. After a pitching change byTerry, Banks bunted for an infield hit to move Perkins to second.Aaron Oberschmidt bunted to reach first and load the bases. Goza’slong fly scored Perkins.

Terry would not go away easily, pushing 2 runs acrosshome plate in the top of the ninth. Davis reached on an error andstole second. Donald singled to score Davis and advanced to secondon the throw-in. Two batters later, Van Pope doubled to scoreDonald.

With 2 outs in the bottom of the inning, Daniel Boyddoubled. On a 1-1 pitch, Perkins lined a rocket to the Bulldogpitcher; who to the surprise of everyone in attendance made asurprising catch to end the game.

Brent Lape picked up the win for Terry, in relief ofstarter Kyle Bridges. Lape threw less than an inning, allowed noruns on 2 hits with no walks or strikeouts. Bridges tossed 8-plusinnings allowing 2 earned runs on 6 hits. He walked 3 and struckout 7.

Justin Sykes suffered the loss for Brookhaven. Hepitched a complete game allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 9 hits. Heissued 2 base-on-balls and fanned 4.

Banks paced the Panther attack with 2 singles and a runscored. Cayce Wallace had 2 singles. Goza had 2 RBIs.
