WESSON – Anyone looking for offensive fireworks found plenty ofit Monday afternoon at Walter R. “Pollie” Sullivan Stadium. Therewere 23 runs, 32 hits and numerous miscues. The final score, though, is what counts, and Co-Lin got the better of it with a 14-9non-division win over Mississippi Delta. The Wolves improved to21-13 while the Trojans fell to 15-15.
“I thought from an offensive standpoint we swung the bats well,”said Wolves head coach Keith Case. “In the last few games we’vebeen making better contact, keeping the ball in play. I thought wehad a pretty good game plan going in, and we jumped on theirstarting pitcher (Wayne Nobile) pretty good.”
Co-Lin starter Chris Kennedy got into trouble at the outset, giving up two runs on two singles, a walk and a hit batsman. TheWolves cut the margin to 2-1 when freshman Arlandas Brown, whoopened with a single, stole two bases and scored on a wild pitch, the first of three by Nobile.
The Trojans added another run in the top of the third on adouble by Edwin Maysonet and an RBI single by Clint Thurman. Co-Lintook the lead for good in the bottom of the inning on an RBI doubleby catcher Ricky Carraway, an RBI triple by right-fielder JasonMiles, and a towering 400-foot home run that hit the top of thescoreboard by designated hitter Britt Hederman. The homer wasHederman’s second of the season.
“The game kinda got to be like slow-pitch softball at onepoint,” said Case. “You score four or five runs and don’t feelcomfortable because Delta comes back and matches us. The thing thatconcerns me the most is the fact that we committed seven errors. Wecan’t expect to win many games making that many mistakes because itcould come back to haunt you.”
The Trojans added two runs in the top of the fourth on RBIsingles by Juan Ortiz and Casey Smith, but the Wolves made it 9-5in the bottom of the fourth on singles by Kyle Beall and BrandonAtkins, an RBI double by Hederman and a sacrifice fly by Miles.
The Wolves and Trojans swapped runs in the fifth, butMississippi Delta tallied three in the top of the sixth on anerror, three wild pitches and a double by Keith Fitzgerald to cutthe Co-Lin lead to 10-9.
The Wolves came back with three runs in their half of theseventh on a single by Ryan Davis, an error and RBI singles byBrown, Beall and Atkins. They pushed across a final run in thebottom of the eighth, thanks to three walks, two hit batsmen and awild pitch.
Beall led the Wolves at the plate with three hits. Brown,Atkins, Hederman and Lea all had two hits.
Fitzgerald had four hits, including a home run, to pace theTrojans.
Kennedy evened his record at 1-1 with four strikeouts, one walkand one hit batter. He gave up 12 hits and five earned runs. Nobilefell to 1-2 with the loss.
“Anytime we can come in the day before a division game and get awin, we’ll take it,” said Case. “We play Southwest in a SouthDivision doubleheader Tuesday, and they gave Gulf Coast all theycould handle. Right now we’re one game behind Jones in the StatePlayoff picture and we’re leading our regional picture.”
Case expects to start sophomore right-hander Chuckie Stracenerand freshman right-hander Derek Atkins today against the Bears. Thefirst game begins at 4 p.m.
