Dan Brown reappointed to school post

A city school board reappointment, consideration of a cityvoting place relocation and some other business were among itemsdiscussed during a routine mayor and board of aldermen meetingTuesday.
Dan Brown was unanimously reappointed for a five-year term onthe Brookhaven School District Board of Trustees. Ward 3 Aldermanthe Rev. Jerry L. Wilson made the motion, and it was seconded byWard 4 Alderman John Roberts.
“He’s an excellent board member,” Roberts said of Brown.
With municipal elections next year, city officials areconsidering moving the Ward 5 voting location from the old firestation behind the chamber of commerce building to the old NationalGuard armory on Highway 51. The current Ward 5 voting place isactually in Ward 4, said City Clerk Iris Rudman.
“Ward 5 does not have a voting place,” said Rudman, adding thatthe displaced location was allowed 10 years ago because Ward 5 didnot have an acceptable public location for voting.

Ward 4 Alderman John Roberts said there has been confusion inthe past between city and county elections and people voting atdifferent places. He suggested city and county elections have thesame voting place.
“I think it would solve a lot of problems,” Roberts said.
Any city or county voting location changes must be pre-clearedby the U.S. Justice Department. Aldermen did not take any action onpossible changes last night.
In other business, aldermen approved two sales of properties inthe industrial park. The cost was the property was $6,000 anacre.
Two acres was sold to Wayland Hunt of Site Work, Inc. to buildan office for an excavating, site preparation business. One acrewas sold to Southern Development, which is in the process ofexpansion its Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Boswellservices on Industrial Park Road, said Chandler Russ, executivevice-president of the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber ofCommerce.
* Aldermen heard from Lincoln County Civil Defense DirectorClifford Galey about the Statewide Mutual Aid Compact to provideassistance in times of disaster. The county is also reviewing thepossibility of joining the compact.
“I think it’s a very good program if we ever need it,” Galeysaid.
* In an effort to boost recycling, Alderman at large HenryNewman suggested the city try to encourage organizations like theBoys Scouts to develop recycling routes to help them raise moneyfor their groups.
“People would save their cans for something like that,” Newmansaid.
* Aldermen set up a special meeting for Monday at 5:30 p.m. tomeet with the new airport board to discuss the long range operationof the facility.
* The board approved a budget revision of $112,000 for an anarchitect contract for the city’s intermodal transportation center.The city has received a $1 million federal appropriation for thecenter and is seeking more to help build it.
* In conjunction with the local Toys for Tots, aldermen approvedgiving 112 old bicycles in storage at the Brookhaven PoliceDepartment to Marvin Jolly for him to repair and give to needychildren in the city.
“This is an opportunity to do something to help children in thecity of Brookhaven,” said City Attorney Joe Fernald in presenting aresolution to allow the donation.
