As a commission prepares to study the possibility of a new stateflag, a group of Brookhaven veterans and others are asking theissue to be put to a statewide vote.
Paul Jackson, who wrote an open letter to commission chairmanWilliam Winter, and veterans disagreed with the concept of 17commission members making a decision on the state flag.
“I think we should have a right to vote on something asimportant as this,” said Alcus Smith, one of more than 30signatures on Jackson’s letter, which was published in The DAILYLEADER Thursday.
Jackson said veterans served under the American flag to protectthe country and freedoms like the ability to vote on issues.Jackson expressed concerns that changing the state flag could bethe first step to changing “Old Glory.”
“Our primary concern is, where will it all stop?” Jackson said.”Our concern is the American flag.”
Winter’s commission is expected to come up with state flagsuggestions and recommendations for the 2001 legislativesession.
Jackson was unsure of the chances of getting the flag issue to avote. However, he indicated voting was the best suggestion.
“We think all people should have an opportunity to vote onthis,” Jackson said.
Earl Taylor, who also signed the letter, said he was glad ofJackson’s effort and supported the idea.
“I think it’s a great thing, rather than have a small group ofpeople decide,” Taylor said. “That way it’ll get the whole stateinvolved with it.”
Jackson said the purpose of the letter is not to stir upanything or offend anyone. It is simply an effort to allow citizensto vote for or against removing the flag.
“We’re asking for this from our hearts, and we hope they’ll seeit that way,” Jackson said.
