Brookhaven residents will see a change in the full-servicewindow hours at the two post offices in town soon, according toPostmaster Gary Black.
“After a six-month analysis, we decided to extend the hours atthe west station, and the full-service window at the main officewill be closed on Saturdays,” he said of the changes, which takeeffect Aug. 19.
During the study, postal employees reported a minimal amount ofbusiness at the downtown branch, located at the corner of WestCherokee Street and South Jackson Street, on Saturdays, Blacksaid.
“There’s just not that much business at the downtown office,”said Black. “People just come in to get their mail mainly.”
Since the post office on Brookhaven Street opened two years ago,it has seen a tremendous amount of customers, especially onSaturdays, at the full-service window, he said.
A full-service window allows customers to buy stamps and moneyorders, as well as mail and pick up parcels. Customers in thedowntown area will still be able to use the window weekdays from8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m., just not on Saturdays.
“Everything will be the same as far as collecting mail anddropping it off in the slot,” said Black. “People will still beable to get their accountable mail and parcels, and they can buystamps from the machine on Saturday.”
The hours for the full-service window at the west office willalso continue as usual Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.Hours of Saturday service will be from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Black hopes the change will not cause any major inconveniencefor residents in Brookhaven. He does not believe it will, becauseresidents can conduct their business during the week at thedowntown office and will have longer to do so at the west office onSaturdays.
