Public Works Director Steve Moreton announced at the Brookhaven Board of Aldermen that the Hazardous Waste Cleanup Day will be on Mar. 28.
From 8 a.m. to 12 noon residents can get rid of things they can’t normally get rid of like batteries and such. Moreton said Homer Richardson, a member of the Keep Lincoln County Beautiful board, is leading the effort.
Richardson said that Saturday morning residents can come to County Farm Road at the City Landfill.
Materials that can be dropped off include paints, weed killers, oil, antifreeze, fertilizer, pesticide, tires, batteries, old electronics, aerosol cans, poisons, flammable liquids, butane tanks, fluorescent bulbs, etc. Richardson said residents cannot bring medical waste, carcasses, animal manure, explosives, ammunition and dynamite etc.
“The idea is we’d like to be able to get rid of hazardous waste before the start of dumpster days,” Richardson said. Dumpsters Days is where dumpsters are placed in areas throughout the county district by district throughout a few weeks allowing people to drop off bulky waste items.
Richardson said the hazardous waste drop off day is earlier because they don’t want people turning in materials that can be considered hazardous waste to dumpsters during Dumpster Days.
The Hazardous Waste Cleanup Day happens every two years made possible by a grant from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Protection.
“I recommend that people start thinking now what kind of stuff they have that is hazardous waste and put it aside so it’s ready to go that Saturday morning,” Richardson said.
Keep Lincoln County Beautiful has been in operation since 1999 and works together with Keep America Beautiful part of the Great American Cleanup.
“We like to do it around the time of spring cleaning,” Richardson said. This is to keep people from dumping their various wastes into ditches or other unauthorized areas.
In other business, the Board approved a request from Eddie Middleton of MMC Materials to purchase six acres in the Industrial Park for relocation of their office servicing the Brookhaven area.
Kenny Goza of the Brookhaven Housing Authority presented a check to the board from the Brookhaven Housing Authority in thank you for the support they gave the organization over the past year.
