A suspect has been identified and a warrant has been issued in connection with the Monday afternoon shooting of a Brookhaven man, said Police Chief Bobby Bell.

The Brookhaven Police Department are looking for Samuel Wade, 21, of 41 Industrial Park Road, and have issued a warrant for his arrest in connection with the shooting.

The shooting victim, Cal Patrick Hoeniges, 19, was transported by ambulance to the University of Mississippi Medical Center Monday after being shot three times near the A-1 Stop convenience store on 313 Industrial Park Road. Police received the call at 5:41 p.m. Monday.

Hoeniges is currently in stable condition.

On Tuesday, police were unable to convince Wade to turn himself in, after reaching out to his family. According to Bell, Wade jumped out of a family member’s car while en route to the police station.

Last known reports place Wade in Pike County, possibly in McComb, Bell said.

Tuesday, Hoeniges spoke about the incident by phone from the hospital. “I cashed a check. Before I could put the money away, a man ran up and took it out of my hands.”

Hoeniges says he pursued the man, who then shot at him.

“He fired five shots total,” Hoeniges said. Two of the bullets passed through each of Hoeniges’ thighs during the attack. Another bullet passed through Hoeniges’ hand.

After being treated for his leg wounds Monday, Hoeniges will now undergo surgery today to repair ligament damage to his hand, he said.

Hoeniges claims the man stole close to $300.

“I’m lucky to be alive. That’s what everyone is telling me,” Hoeniges said.
