Pearl River wins twinbill over Co-Lin

POPLARVILLE – The Pearl River Wildcats swept the Copiah-Lincoln Wolfpack in MACJC South Division baseball action in Poplarville on Saturday. The Wildcats took the first game of the doubleheader 9-3 (nine inning game) and a 4-3 victory in the nightcap (seven inning game). The Wolfpack dropped to 9-23 and 5-8 in the South Division. Pearl River improved to 19-15 and 6-8 in division play.

Pearl River 9, Co-Lin 3 (9 innings) 

The Wolfpack took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Pearl River took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as they plated four runs. The Wolfpack added two runs in the top of the sixth to pull to 4-3. But the Wildcats added two runs in the seventh and three runs in the eighth to pull away.

Co-Lin committed four errors and outhit the Wildcats 9-8.

Freshman Blake Talbot (1-1) absorbed the loss for the Wolfpack going five innings, allowing four hits, striking out three and walking two. Alex Smith pitched an inning allowing one hit, striking out one and walking one. Branden Canny threw 1.2 innings, allowed three hits, struck out two and walked one. Also seeing action was freshman Tanner Parvin who pitched .1 inning.

Starter Jake Brumfield (5-2) picked up the win, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing eight hits, striking out three and walking one. Colton Lee relieved Brumfield in the sixth inning. Lee allowed one hit, struck out one and walked one.

Dominic Savage led the Wolfpack at the plate with a double and a single and one RBI. Adding support with a single apiece were Adrian Brown, Choc Hubbard, Philip Lott, Wesley Watts, Colby Whitfield, Ryan Young, and Logan Smith (two RBIs).

For the Wildcats, Derrick Mount blasted two singles and accounted for four RBIs in the game. Tracy Hadley doubled and singled. Adding support were Darien Brown, Kyle Dolan, Kreg Garner and Nathan Pugh (two RBIs).

Pearl River 4, Co-Lin 3 (7 innings) 

The Wildcats scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the 4-3 win. The Wolfpack broke the 1-1 tie in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead. Pearl River tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning. Both teams added a run in the sixth inning, as they remained tied at three-all going into the seventh inning.

Reliever Justin Demary (2-1) was the winning pitcher, allowing two hits and walking one in three innings of work. Starter Jacob Taylor pitched four innings giving up four hits, striking out three and walking three.

Casey Hurley (2-2) was the losing pitcher in relief of starter Colby Whitfield. Hurley pitched .2 innings, allowed three hits, struck out one and walked one. Whitfield threw 5.1 innings allowed five hits, struck out one and walked one.

For the second straight game, Savage led the Wolfpack at the plate with a double and a single (one RBI). Smith had a pair of singles and two RBIs. Hubbard and Mitch Little had a single apiece.

For Pearl River, Dolan and Garner (one RBI) had a pair of singles. Jalen Haskin (one RBI), Brown, Pugh, and Adam Smith added support with a single apiece.

Co-Lin swept Pearl River 9-8 and 2-1, both eight-inning games, in a previous doubleheader played March 12 in Wesson.
