The Brookhaven Academy Cougars kicked off the 2014 baseball campaign on a losing note as the Silliman Institute Wildcats edged the Cougars 2-1 Tuesday night at Harold Williams Ballpark.

“We did not play very well offensively,” said Brookhaven Academy coach Casey Edwards. “Our pitching was strong enough to win the game, but we left too many runners on in scoring positions. We need to continue to keep working hard in practice and in game to get better.”

Zach Dickerson suffered the setback on opening day as he was the starting pitcher for the Cougars. He had no strikeouts, no walks and gave up two hits in three innings pitched.

Senior catcher Landon Nettles was the offensive leader at the plate for the Cougars with three doubles. Heath Hickman smashed a double and a single with one RBI.

Brookhaven Academy (0-1) returns to action Friday on the road as they prepare to visit Columbia Academy. Junior varsity begins at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 7.
